Public Interest
Public Interest law encompasses a wide range of legal principles and regulations that govern issues related to the public good and the protection of vulnerable populations.
In terms of public interest law, this includes laws and regulations related to issues such as civil rights, environmental protection, consumer protection, and public health and safety. Public interest law also includes laws related to the provision of public services, such as education, housing, and healthcare, as well as laws related to the protection of marginalized and disadvantaged groups, such as refugees and low-income individuals.
Public Interest attorneys work to ensure that laws and regulations that affect the public are fair, just and serve the public good. They use the legal system to promote and protect the rights of individuals, communities, and the environment. They typically represent the underrepresented groups and individuals that cannot afford to hire an attorney.
Uses of Public Interest law include:
- Representing individuals and groups in legal cases related to civil rights, such as discrimination, voter suppression, and police misconduct
- Advising and representing organizations and individuals on compliance with laws and regulations related to environmental protection, such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act

- Advising and representing organizations and individuals on compliance with laws and regulations related to public health and safety, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act with Disabilities Act
- Advising and representing organizations and individuals on compliance with laws and regulations related to the provision of public services, such as education, housing, and healthcare
- Advising and representing organizations and individuals on compliance with laws and regulations related to the protection of marginalized and disadvantaged groups, such as refugees and low-income individuals
- Representing individuals, communities and environmental groups to address the issues such as land use and development, pollution and contamination, and endangered species.
- Representing clients in administrative and regulatory proceedings related to the environment, public health, and consumer protection.
- Representing and advocating for the rights of low-income individuals and families, including access to healthcare, housing, and education.
- Representing and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities, such as people of color, people with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ individuals.
